Leadership Team

Bob Esrey is a graduate of Denison University and began his career in commercial real estate in 1964. He has managed more than 60,000 multi-family units and 27 million square feet of commercial space in nearly 200 markets across the United States. As a Certified Property Manager (CPM) and Counselor of Real Estate (CRE), Bob has taken an active role in leasing, brokerage, syndication, consulting and, most notably, property management.

Bob has given countless hours serving professional associations locally, regionally and nationwide. These positions include: past president of the Kansas City IREM Chapter, former president of the National Apartment Association, former president of the Missouri Association of Realtors and president of the Metropolitan Kansas City Board of Realtors. Respected for his integrity and dedication, Bob has received the Property Manager of the Year Award for the IREM chapter, and Realtor of the Year from the Missouri Association of Realtors. In addition, he is a member of several area boards.

Lee Harris is a 1975 graduate of Kansas State University, where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in economics. Upon graduation he joined Cohen-Esrey where he now serves as President and CEO. He is a Certified Property Manager through the Institute of Real Estate Management and CRE designated by the Counselors of Real Estate. Lee has been personally involved in the management of more than 60,000 multi-family units and 25 million square feet of office building, industrial and shopping center space throughout the country. He has worked with real estate investment trusts, insurance companies, pension funds, banks, savings and loans, developers, government agencies, and corporate and individual investors.
 

In 1979 Lee became a member of the Institute of Real Estate Management’s Academy of Authors by publishing numerous articles regarding the commercial real estate industry. He has written a wide range of articles for The Journal of Property Management, Affordable Housing Finance Magazine, Apartment Finance Today, Scotsmen Guide, Real Estate Issues, and a number of other publications. He was the 1986 president of the Kansas City IREM Chapter and was the Chapter’s 1988 recipient of the Certified Property Manager of the Year award.

Jeanette Jayne is Executive Vice President and serves as Cohen-Esrey’s Managing Director. She joined Cohen-Esrey in 1996 and was promoted to Chief Information Officer in 1999 and then to Chief Administrative Officer in 2001. Jeanette assumed her current role as Managing Director in 2007. As Managing Director, she oversees the administrative integration of all business units and profit centers. Jeanette also manages human resources, office operations, information technology, legal matters and provides leadership for the overall corporate infrastructure.

Prior to her years at Cohen-Esrey, Jeanette worked for Midland Bank’s REO department where she was instrumental in preparing $20 million in foreclosed properties for disposition as well as providing financial management and reporting for numerous properties. Before Midland, Jeanette spent six years with Copaken, White & Blitt as property manager for five suburban office buildings totaling 580,000 square feet. Jeanette currently holds real estate licenses in both Kansas and Missouri. She serves on the board of Lakeview Village, a non-profit continuing care retirement community and was a past board member of the Greater Kansas City YMCA. She was a recipient of the Kansas City Business Journal’s Women Who Mean BusinessTM award in 2015.

Ryan Huffman joined Cohen-Esrey in 2002 as an assistant property manager in the firm’s commercial management division. He was promoted to commercial property manager, responsible for the oversight of 1.1 million square feet of office, retail and industrial flex space in the Kansas City and Topeka areas. Ryan became regional manager in 2005 and Managing Director of Cohen-Esrey Communities in 2007.

As the Managing Director of Cohen-Esrey Communities, Ryan added strategc planning and implementation, business development, intensive training for on-site personnel and financial performance reviews to his previous responsibilities. In 2016, Ryan took on the additional roles of Cohen-Esrey’s Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director of Cohen-Esrey Apartment Investors (CEAI).

A cum laude graduate of University of Missouri in Columbia, Huffman also holds real estate licenses in both Kansas and Missouri. He is a Certified Property Manager (CPM) through the Institute of Real Estate Management.

Marcie Teenor is the Chief Financial Officer for Cohen-Esrey, LLC. Marcie’s responsibilities include advising the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team as to the financial condition of the firm, designing, implementing and upgrading key financial systems, processes and required financial reporting for the firm. In addition, Marcie is also responsible for developing, maintaining and overseeing the company’s operating budget and recommending strategic and tactical adjustments based on cash flow requirements and business activities. She also oversees the accounting team, providing coaching and mentoring to increase professional growth.

Marcie came to Cohen-Esrey in 2013 with many years of experience in real estate having been with two other commercial brokerage and development companies. In addition, she served as the Director of Business Operations for a large school district where she was responsible for the oversight of an annual budget of $125 million. In addition, she procured grants totaling $59.6 million and served as the owner’s representative for over $150 million in capital outlay and construction projects.

Marcie graduated from Southwestern College with a Bachelors of Business Administration with a major in Accounting. She earned her Certified Public Accounting Certificate in 1989.

Jon Atlas currently serves as the Managing Director of Cohen-Esrey Development Group. In this role, he oversees the development and construction teams, which source, analyze, finance, and build market rate and affordable housing development projects across the country. Jon has many years of housing, tax credit, and policy experience.

Prior to joining Cohen-Esrey in 2015, Jon was a vice president at JP Morgan in Chicago, where he underwrote and closed more than 40 LIHTC transactions across the country, encompassing $500 million in equity and approximately $1 billion in total development cost. He previously worked for National Equity Fund as an associate fund manager, raising LIHTC equity from institutional tax credit investors. In addition, Jon served as a legislative assistant for two members of Congress in Washington, D.C., advising them on a variety of topics including housing, economic development, taxes, and public safety.

Jon graduated from Duke University, where he received a degree in public policy studies. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago with concentrations in finance, economics, and entrepreneurship.

John Hinman serves as Managing Director of Nexus 5 Group. John oversees the construction management (multi-family and commercial), capital improvements and maintenance, and component distribution for Cohen-Esrey and several third party clients throughout the United States.

With more than 25 years in the construction industry, John’s experience includes business operations, business strategy, business development, project management, estimating, and safety. Prior to joining the Cohen-Esrey team in 2011, John spent nearly 20 years working in the construction industry and managed over $52,000,000 worth of projects for churches, banks, medical facilities, office buildings, and non-profit organizations.

John graduated from Kansas State University in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science Degree, in Construction Science and Management. When John is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 kids and is very involved with his church.

Phil has been in the mortgage banking industry for over 25 years with a focus on multifamily finance during that time. He has been responsible for directly sourcing capital totaling over $4 billion while also leading production teams responsible for over $5 billion in financing. Phil has worked closely with Cohen-Esrey for the past 20+ years as a trusted source for debt and equity through his industry relationships. He has been married to his wife Reagan for 25 years, they have two girls (17 and 12), two dogs, and two cats. He graduated from the University of New Orleans with a BS in Economics, has written extensively in industry periodicals as well as been a sought-after speaker at various industry conferences.

Jennifer Turner, joined Cohen-Esrey in 2018 and serves as the Director of Human Resources. Jennifer oversees all aspects of human resources, including recruiting, employee relations, HR compliance, payroll and learning development.

Through Jennifer’s leadership, the HR division of Cohen-Esrey conducted their first Team Member Perception Survey receiving feedback related to culture and benefits. Cohen-Esrey’s goal is to be a company with a team member NPS score of greater than +50. She is also Caliper Essentials Certified which is used, in part, to select and develop talent within the organization.

Jennifer has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with over 25 years of progressive HR experience in multi-family, financial, banking, insurance and utility industries.

Mark Fletcher joined Cohen-Esrey in 2008. He oversees the IT department and takes the lead in technology strategy and project portfolio management. Mark drives an innovative technology stack that meets the needs of tens of thousands of apartment residents and hundreds of Cohen-Esrey team members. Mark also plays a key role on the marketing and branding team.

Mark has over 20 years of experience managing IT operations, project management offices, and individual software development projects. Mark has operated as a CIO, IT domain manager, project manager, program manager, vendor manager, service delivery manager, web developer, and data modeler. Mark spent 9 years in the IT consulting industry and over 12 years working and directing corporate IT operations.
